What is mCommerce?

Mobile commerce – also known as mCommerce – refers to the buying or selling of goods or services specifically through mobile devices. In 2019, a third of all online shopping in the UK was done on mobile devices, including smartphones, tablets, home assistants, and smart watches.

As the number of people using mobile devices worldwide continues to grow, mCommerce has rapidly accelerated in tandem and shows no signs of slowing down. With more people shopping online than ever before, businesses must provide a mobile-friendly shopping experience and prepare themselves for the future of mobile commerce.

  • What are the key benefits of mobile commerce?

mCommerce solutions give your customers the ability to browse and buy online while on the move, providing the ultimate flexibility in ways to shop. Not only does this provide a more streamlined and convenient shopping experience, but it also allows your business to utilise an omnichannel approach to engaging prospective customers at more touchpoints than ever before.

Merchant on their phone using Virtual Terminal

mCommerce point of sale

Our Virtual Terminal mCommerce solution gives you the ability to make your phone, computer – or any other device with internet access – into a point of sale (POS) device and process ‘card not present’ payments quickly and securely whenever you need to.

Your Virtual Terminal exists online, meaning you can access it from your computer, tablet, or smartphone and accept payments anytime, anywhere, even out of business hours. Plus, you can rest assured that each transaction is as secure and compliant as you’d expect.

Using a virtual terminal is as easy as 1, 2, 3

mCommerce and eCommerce are not separate entities. Mobile Commerce is kind of like the next evolution of Electronic Commerce – which refers to buying and selling goods or services online. Where eCommerce tends to refer to transactions involving desktop or laptop computers, mCommerce transactions are made via digital devices like smartphones, tablets, and other wireless mobile devices.

Mobile commerce is categorised into 3 types of transactions: mobile shopping, mobile payments, and mobile banking. Mobile shopping: eCommerce using a mobile device; made possible through mobile-optimised websites, apps, or social media platforms. Mobile payments: Allow customers to make purchases in person by using a mobile device. Mobile payments can include mobile wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc.), mobile transfers, and in-app purchases. Mobile banking: Usually involves a dedicated banking app, like online banking but often with some limitations or restrictions.
